Flashes look to build on early season success

The Kent State women’s golf team will try to replicate the dominant performance they had in its opener in its second tournament of the season.
The Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate will take place this Monday in Knoxville, Tennessee, with the Flashes looking to repeat as champions.
The Flashes won their first tournament of the season, shooting 16-under-par 848, well ahead of the rest of the field, led by senior Karoline Stormo’s tie for second place and freshman Caley McGinty, who came in tied for fourth.
The Flashes will look to repeat this success behind their upperclassmen, said coach Lisa Strom.
“Obviously we had great performances from our seniors. They really are just able to do their own thing on the golf course,” Strom said.
Those seniors are Stormo, who shot 7-under-par 209 and Pimnipa Panthong, who finished at 5-under-par 211, and placed sixth.
Strom said the Flashes’ theme for the season is “The Climb” and that the first tournament was a great step on that journey.
“This was a great first stopping point, reflecting on what we need to get better on,” she said.
Strom said that competition within the team was important to their success.
“When you have the depth that we have it’s competitive,” she said. “And that’s what feeds great play on the golf course and in tournaments.”
