The city of Tallmadge honored those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks through a 24-hour candlelight vigil on Wednesday. 

The candles were displayed on the sidewalks of the Tallmadge Circle Park at the historic roundabout in the center of town. There were 343 red candles symbolizing the firefighters, 60 blue candles for the police officers, 55 green for military personnel and 2,518 white candles for the civilians. Volunteers began lighting candles at 8 a.m. The candles stood throughout the day but were extinguished at one point by heavy rain. 

As the sun set, community members returned to relight the candles in the darkness, then stood with firefighters and families together in memory of the fateful day.

Tallmadge City Fire Chief Michael Passarelli and Firefighter Jeff Quick started this tradition in 2003. Donations from local businesses and members of the community are used to purchase the candles.
