Kent State’s field hockey team came up short in overtime play against Indiana in the final game of the regular season, losing 3-2. 

KSU’s overall record fell to 7-10 while having a Mid-American Conference record of 5-2, putting them in third place in the conference.

Indiana’s record improves to 6-13.

The two teams headed into Sunday with a record of 3-2 against each other since 2012 in favor of Kent State. 

The previous two games were won in overtime by the Flashes.

Indiana wasted no time to open the game as the Hoosiers scored in the first 45 seconds of the game, taking a 1-0 lead. 

Two minutes later, Kent State’s sophomore midfielder Patricia Strunk responded to tie the game 1-1. 

Kent State had two shots in the quarter compared to Indiana’s three.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second quarter. Indiana would collect four shots and earn one penalty. 

KSU’s sophomore goalkeeper, Allison Wood, started her second game of the season, recording three saves in the quarter.

Strunk would score again to give the Flashes a 2-1 lead in the third quarter, converting on a penalty corner. 

Her six goals this season are second-best on the team and the first time she’s scored multiple goals in a game.

Indiana would not go away as the Hoosiers tied the game 2-2, scoring with five minutes to go in the third quarter. 

In the final minutes of regulation, neither team was able to score, leading to overtime.

The Hoosiers scored in the ninth minute, ending the game 3-2.

On the season, KSU is 0-3 when going into overtime.

Strunk finished the game with two shots and two goals. 

Kent State led the game in saves (4) and penalty corners (3). 

KSU totaled four shots and three on goal; IU totaled 11 shots and seven on goal.

The Flashes will head to Oxford, Ohio, to face off against conference leader Appalachian State (14-4, 6-1) Friday at 2:30 in the opening round of the MAC Tournament. 

The Mountaineers are tied with Miami with the most goals (42) in the conference and have allowed the second-fewest goals (27).

Through 17 games, Kent State has scored and allowed 33 goals.

Earlier this season, Appalachian State defeated the Flashes 2-1 in a shootout.

All-time KSU is 8-2 against the Mountaineers; however, the Flashes have lost the previous two games.
