Best of Kent 2019
Winner: Franklin Square Deli
Nestled on the corner of East Main and Water Street stands Franklin Square Deli, a longtime favorite in the Kent community. For over 35 years, the sandwich shop has boomed with business and offers dozens of sandwiches.
The popular spot features sandwiches such as the “New Yorker,” which comes with lean corned beef round, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and Gulden’s Mustard on thick-cut deli rye bread. Guests can also opt for a jumbo bagel sandwich instead of traditional deli-style sandwiches. The jumbo “Motor City Bagel” comes with turkey, colby cheese, onion and honey mustard on a plain bagel.
Part of what makes Franklin Square Deli so well-liked is the simplicity of it all. With motor-sport themed decor, and the ability to watch your food being prepared, you never have to feel like you’re rushed in and out. One voter said its an “oldie but a goodie. My parents used to go there when they were my age. We always loved the subs, the interior and the history of the place.”
Second: Twisted Meltz
Twisted Meltz is the place to go when you want to try something new. The family-owned restaurant is home to over 25 gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, soups, craft beer and salads.
Sandwiches here are named after celebrities and can seem to have a personality of their own. A little over 5 years old, it’s home to sandwiches like “Antonio Gates,” with blueberry-infused sausage, eggs, tater tots, cheddar and a side of maple syrup and the “Mark Mothersbaugh,” which has Sriracha bourbon chicken, hickory bacon, grilled pineapple and red onions with white American and pepper-jack cheese.
To wash it all down you can enjoy a craft beer or a refreshing milkshake. As one voter wrote Twisted Meltz has “great food and even better milkshakes.”
Third: Penn Station East Coast Subs
The popular sandwich franchise has the hearts of the Kent Community. With 313 stores in 15 states, Penn Station’s Kent franchise is no stranger to the style of the company. With freshly squeezed lemonade, hand-cut fries and over a dozen subs, you can fill your cravings here. The sandwiches range from chicken cordon bleu to grilled artichoke and can be ordered in four sizes.
