United Students Against Sweatshops, formerly known as Students for a Democratic Society, is calling all artists to submit art for its May 4 memorial art show.
The theme for the May 1, 2024, show is “Art as a Form of Protest.” There are no limitations for the medium the artists choose; however, physical art is preferred. While the art does not have to pertain specifically to the events of May 4, 1970, all art must be political in nature.
“Art can grab and hold a person’s attention,” said Vanessa Moore, the social media manager and historian for USAS. “As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. It can convey strong messages in ways that words sometimes can’t. It’s like a universal language that crosses barriers and gets people thinking and feeling deeply about important issues. When you see a powerful image or sculpture, it sticks with you, and that’s exactly what you want when you’re trying to create change or spark a movement.”
Any artist can submit work, and they do not have to be a Kent State student. All artists must attach their names to their submissions. The work cannot be AI-generated or made by someone else.
Submissions are open now until March 31, 2024. Late submissions will not be accepted. However, if USAS receives enough submissions before that date, it will close the application. USAS will post updates on its social media.
The exhibition will open and close May 1, 2024, with a reception alongside it from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Schwebel Room of The Student Center.
