With a commitment to local agriculture, loyal vendors and community engagement, Haymaker Farmers’ Market remains a symbol of resilience and connection in Kent.
There may be a chill in the air this February, but as you swing open the doors of Kent’s own Haymaker Farmers’ Market, you step into a warm environment — both in temperature and community.
Because of its indoor and outdoor locations, the market keeps its doors open every Saturday of the year and creates a vibrant environment full of warmth and charm.
“I do all the roasting of the beans, serve coffee and make cold brew in the summer,” Carter Bailey, a vendor and owner of K.C. & Family Coffee, said. “I’ve been doing this market for probably 12 or 13 years, it’s so nice to be able to have the market all year.”
From December through March, shoppers can find the market at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent in Hobbs Hall. From April to November, it runs down Franklin Avenue.
The market began its 32nd year in business this year. Some vendors have been bringing their products to sell since the very beginning.
It’s not uncommon for vendors to stick around for years, as the market seems to be a favorite: “I love seeing all the vendors’ kids growing up,” Bailey said. “I’ve seen them as babies and now some of them are 15!”
Whether vendors are beginning their first year at the market or have been there for a decade, they all share the joy of the Kent community.
Another vendor who has been serving the market since 2022, Bee Gluten Free Bakery, offers unique baked goods for everyone to enjoy.
“Our favorite part is just meeting all the people; we’ve made some friends,” Sam Bartshe, a part-owner of the bakery, said. “Also seeing the excitement of people being able to find gluten-free sweets.”
