The spin bikes are rolling at 7 a.m. at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. As disco lights and 2000s music fill the room, Gianna Delucia prepares her students for their early morning ride.
“My favorite part about attending spin class is when they play fun, upbeat music,” sophomore nursing major Jenna Kulka said. “I started going to spin because all of my friends went, but I stuck with it because it is good exercise and I have a good time.”
Delucia decided she wanted to be a Kent State spin instructor after she designed and taught a spin class for her beginner spin course last semester.
“I enjoy the atmosphere you can create in a class,” she said. “I love seeing everyone having fun together and I am happy I can contribute to that.”
The process of becoming an instructor through the university includes getting certified through an online course. Other certifications include CPR, working with minors, blood-borne pathogens and other training hosted by Recreation and Wellness Services.
Some individuals choose to become spin instructors for their own personal goals, but Delucia’s purpose is for her students.
“My goal for every class is that everyone feels comfortable being there,” she said. “I don’t want anyone to feel intimidated or nervous and it just makes the class have a positive energy to it.”
To keep her students motivated and eager to take another class, Delucia will often do music themes.
“A few themes I have done are the ’90s rock, a Queen ride, and 2000s throwbacks,” she said. “For the most part, I will just make a playlist with many feel-good songs.”
Spin classes are available Monday through Sunday with times that vary.
