Her Campus is celebrating its 10th anniversary at Kent State with Her Week, a variety of events throughout the week.
Her Campus is an online women’s college magazine and organization where members post on social media, write and plan events. Her Week includes five days of events focused on empowering and celebrating women.
“Her Week is something that was kind of ambitious of us,” events director and sophomore digital media production major Bailey Fair said. “It’s a five-day-long event starting Tuesday, April 9 and every day is kind of formatted around a career.”
Aislinn Foran, president of Her Campus, encourages everyone to come celebrate and attend events throughout the week.
“Even though it’s called Her Week, it’s to celebrate women, so we encourage all gender identities to come celebrate women,” she said.
The first day of events on Tuesday is called “Her Media,” which will celebrate social media, film and other forms of media. “We have some speakers who are in the news media world,” Foran said.
The Female Filmmakers Initiative (FFI) will also be joining Her Campus to do a presentation on diversity in media.
The next theme of events is “Her Story,” with a focus on journalism on Wednesday and literature on Thursday.
“Her Story” journalism includes two panels, one of professional journalists in the industry and the other of student journalists.
“We’re also having a student journalist panel to help encourage networking and encourage freshmen and sophomores to see what Kent State can do for them and the connections that Kent State can provide,” Foran said.
“Her Story” literature features a speaker, Amanda Miller, who will discuss self-publishing and careers in literature. “We also have a local author coming in, Amanda Dew, and we’re going to be giving away some of her books and a book signing,” Foran said.
“I am most looking forward to our ‘Her Future’ day, we have a lot of cool things going on that day,” Fair said. “Her Future” includes a speaker coming in to talk about reproductive rights as well as the League of Women Voters in Ohio to encourage and help students to register to vote.
The last event of the week is “Her Fashion,” which will include a panel of Kent State alumni and students in the fashion program. “We’re having an upcycling event during it and then after that we’re going to have a fun low-stakes fashion show,” Foran said.
The upcycling event lets students bring in old clothes to upcycle and create something new. They’re also encouraging students to wear clothes in the fashion show that they haven’t gotten a chance to wear often. “We encourage people to wear that and show it off in our little fashion show,” Foran said.
“We also have free food every day and are doing giveaways every day, so we’re really excited to be offering kind of an incentive and a fun thing for people to do when they come,” Fair said.
