Navigating the transition to life in a new country can be both exciting and challenging, especially for international students. At Kent State, the International Navigators Collegiate at Kent (INCK) stands as a beacon of support, ensuring that international students find a welcoming community and a smooth transition to life in the United States.
Founded with a mission to empower and support international students, INCK offers a variety of programs designed to foster a sense of belonging and community.
“I have a very strong passion for helping international students when they come to the United States to adjust and make friendships,” INCK founder Amanda Du Plooy said. “But most of all, I want them to have a place where they can go, and it feels like a home away from home.”
Through a wide range of recreational activities and events, including a game night every Saturday, INCK provides a space for international students to unwind and connect.
On Sept. 13, INCK students will have the opportunity to have dinner with an American family during the organization’s Dinner with Friends event, allowing them to learn more about American culture in a warm, friendly setting. Later this month on Sept. 20, INCK will host a Paint Night, where students can explore their artistic talents while enjoying the company of friends.
As a highlight of INCK’s fall schedule, the organization will host 40 students for its Getaway Camp at Skyview Ranch in Millersburg, Ohio, a weekend retreat packed with activities such as games, music, dancing and team-building exercises.
“The most rewarding aspect of this is building the friendships and being there for students in need,” Du Plooy said. “It’s what makes all the effort worthwhile.”
As the International Navigators Collegiate continues to grow with a packed schedule of events that seek to provide international students with a community and support system, its mission is to offer students a home away from home.
“INCK is more than just a group; it’s a family,” said INCK president Chukwudi Nwoko. “We are here to make sure that every international student feels supported and has a network they can rely on. The friendships we build here are for life.”
