The 2024 76th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, held on Sept. 7, honored the best in artistic and technical achievement in American primetime television programming from June 1, 2023, until May 31, 2024, as chosen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The Creative Arts Emmys, held over two nights, recognized a range of achievements in television across various categories. Now, the Creative Arts Emmys are different from the regular Emmy awards you may be used to. The Emmys, which premiered Sept. 15, award categories like, Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actor in a Drama Series, etc. The Creative Arts Emmys cover the categories below. Here is your recap of everything you may have missed:
Shōgun
FX on Hulu’s newest historical limited drama series, “Shōgun,” was the standout, taking home a record-breaking 14 awards. This is the most awarded single season of a television program ever, beating Game of Thrones’ previous 2019 record of 12. The most notable awards won were:
- Best Production Design
- Best Special Visual Effects
- Best Stunt Performance
- Best Casting for a Drama
- Best Guest Actor in a Drama (Néstor Carbonell)
- Best Cinematography
The Bear
The other major wins were for FX on Hulu’s acclaimed drama/comedy series, “The Bear,” which followed with seven wins, demonstrating its success as a top scripted series. Some of the Creative Arts awards “The Bear” won include:
- Outstanding Casting
- Outstanding Guest Actor (Jon Bernthal)
- Outstanding Guest Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis)
EGOT Status
There were also a number of people who reached EGOT status that night.
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the songwriting duo famous for “Dear Evan Hansen,” “La La Land” and “The Greatest Showman” officially joined the exclusive club when they picked up their first Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for writing the song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” performed by Steve Martin’s character on the third season of “Only Murders in the Building.”
Angela Bassett and Jamie Lee Curtis did not reach EGOT status, but both reached the halfway mark that night. Basset for her narration in “Queens” and Curtis for her guest spot on “The Bear”.
Notable awards
- Sandra Oh won her first Emmy for a producer credit on the TV movie, “Quiz Lady.”
- Michaela Coel took home her second Emmy overall for her guest spot on “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”
- Eric Andre took home an award for Outstanding Performer in a Short-Form Comedy or Drama Series for his show, “The Eric Andre Show.”
“Saturday Night Live,” a personal favorite of mine, won six awards, including:
- Outstanding Directing For A Variety Series, Liz Patrick for Host Ryan Gosling.
- Outstanding Makeup for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program.
- Outstanding Production Design for a Variety or Reality Series, Host Josh Brolin.
