A week after losing in an upset to Saint Francis of the FCS, the Flashes went on the road Saturday as an underdog looking to pull a stunner – the road trip did not go smoothly.
Kent State now finds itself 0-3 (0-0) on the season after being shutout to Tennessee 71-0. The team is last in the Mid-American Conference.
No. 7 Tennessee finds itself at 3-0 (0-0) after the domination.
KSU was outplayed from the opening kickoff, with its first three drives resulting in a punt, a safety and another punt.
The Volunteers scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, and Tennessee led 65-0 at halftime.
The Flashes only generated 112 yards of offense, and their best drive resulted in a missed 51-yard fourth quarter field goal that came up just short.
The Flashes gave up 740 yards of offense, with 456 of those yards coming on the ground. The defense performed better when Tennessee took its foot off the breaks in the second half and held the Vols to 6 points with the final score being 71-0.
Next week, Kent State will head to Happy Valley for the first time since 2018 to play No. 8 Penn State (2-0, 0-0) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
