After the 71-0 beatdown against No. 6 Tennessee (3-0, 0-0), the Kent State football team was again on the road against a top-10 team. This time, the task was No. 10 Penn State.
The result was much of the same, as Kent State failed to score for the second week in a row, losing by a score of 56-0, as the Nittany Lions improved to 3-0 (0-0) on the season.
On the second play of the game, redshirt junior quarterback Devin Kargman suffered a right leg injury and was carted off the field. Freshman J.D. Sherrod came in for the Flashes afterwards.
Late in the first half, Sherrod too got injured, resulting in junior Tommy Ulatowski being the third quarterback to take snaps for the Flashes on the day.
The defense held for a while, as Penn State only had seven points halfway through the second quarter, but eventually the Nittany Lions’ offense exploded, as they scored 21 points in the final six minutes of the first half.
After picking up only 112 yards of offense last week, Kent State’s offense was unable to match it, as the 67 yards against Penn State’s defense are a new season low.
The defense, though they were effective early, ended up allowing 718 yards, a program record for Penn State.
The road defeat wraps up non-conference play for the Flashes, and they will return home next week for the homecoming game against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (3-1, 0-0).
