The 12th annual Bra Recycling Drive, aiming to promote National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and sustainability, started Sept. 30 and runs through Nov. 1.
Kent State University Athletics, Employee Wellness and Health Promotion, Kent State of Well-being, Office of Sustainability and the Women’s Center are hosting the event, where anyone can donate unused or used bras.
People will also have the opportunity to receive a mammogram screening at Heer Hall, which can be scheduled online. Other drop-off locations include the Williamson House, Memorial Athletic Convocation Center and Well Hub.
Melanie Knowles, sustainability manager on campus, outlined the environmental issue the drive is aiming to address.
“Textiles are something that is hard to keep out of the landfill, but for clothes that are worn out, it is hard to find an outlet for them,” Knowles said. “So, this was an opportunity to capture this, and the particular company we send them to specializes in recycling bras.”
Bras that are in good condition will be donated to the Phyllis Zumkehr County Clothing Center and worn-out bras will be given to The Bra Recyclers to be repurposed.
