International students often face challenges related to mental health, stemming from cultural adjustment, academic pressures and isolation.
At Kent State, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) plays a central role in providing mental health support tailored to the needs of these students.
CAPS offers both in-person and telehealth services, including workshops and skill-building series aimed at reducing stress and promoting resilience. Group and individual counseling, as well as crisis support, is available to all students. Licensed counselors and psychologists staff the center, providing culturally sensitive care.
Jayita Datta, a clinical psychologist with a focus on international students, highlighted the importance of understanding the unique needs of this population.
“Many international students struggle with the pressure to succeed academically while also dealing with feelings of isolation,” Datta said. “CAPS strives to provide trauma-informed and culturally-responsive care to support these students in navigating their challenges.”
CAPS services are designed to be accessible to all students, regardless of their location, through the availability of telehealth. This flexibility is particularly important for students who may be more comfortable accessing services remotely.
As Kent State continues to welcome a diverse student body, including an increasing number of international students, CAPS remains a major resource in supporting mental health on campus.
