Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued a state of emergency Tuesday for Northeast Ohio counties hit by heavy snowstorms since Friday.
The state of emergency covers Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga and Lake counties, which are under several feet of snow after a series of lake-effect snowstorms.
Also on Tuesday, Kent State Ashtabula canceled classes for the second day this week. The campus has received more than 36.5 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.
Hazardous road conditions are expected to continue in the region with snow squalls expected to bring wind gusts of more than 40 miles an hour and potential gales across Lake Erie.
“In addition to the support the state has already provided, we anticipate that more resources will be necessary as the week progresses,” DeWine said in a press release. “This proclamation readies our state agencies to assist the impacted counties without delay.”
The Ohio Department of Transportation has relocated staff and equipment from nearby counties that did not experience heavy snowfall to assist in snow removal efforts. The Ohio State Highway Patrol has also increased staff to respond to crashes.
