MLK Day of Service to take place Jan. 21

University College and Hillel Jewish Center are hosting Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Jan. 21.
The 10th annual day of service will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

Constructing a children’s play space
- Upper Room Ministries
Construction with Hattie Larlham for people with (dis)abilities
- A community house
Cooking with Campus Kitchen
- Campus Kitchen in Beall Hall
Creating for days for girls
- Hillel
Creating literacy kits
- United Way of Portage County
Creating reusable t-shirt tote bags
- Women’s Center
Knitting for those in need
- 4th floor of the library
Serving breakfast
- Skeels-Mathews Community Center
The day will start at Oscar Ritchie Hall with a performance by the Kent African Dance Ensemble and opening words from Eboni Pringle, the dean of the University College.
Lunch will be provided to volunteers at one of the three workshops available after the day of service.
Each workshop will be hosted by different organizations with discussion topics to promote reflection, said Amanda Woodyard, director of Community Engaged Learning.
“What MLK stood for was breaking down barriers, breaking down walls, not focusing on our differences but coming together to work through challenges and turning simple dialogues into simple solutions for the community,” Woodyard said.
