Before 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, a student at Jackson Memorial Middle School sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and first responders transported him to the hospital for his injury. The student’s condition and why the student brought the weapon to school are unknown.

Police reported the incident happened in a boy’s restroom, and the rest of the students and staff have been deemed safe.

Once the gunshot was heard, the school went into lockdown and the WiFi was shut down. Police began to evacuate children shortly after 12 p.m. Students have been asked to leave all backpacks and jackets in the school. They will be able to pick up personal belongings tomorrow.

Police announced during a press conference most students have been reunited with their parents. There will be a staff meeting later in the day to discuss the incident, but the investigation is still ongoing.

Police believed to have found “distractionary devices” in the student’s backpack, but nothing that resembled explosives. There were no bombs at the scene, and only one gun was found. 

JMMS Superintendent Chris DiLoreto said he notified all parents of the incident as soon as it happened via notifications. 

The condition of the student is still unknown.
