Accident causes car to flip on its side near campus
January 29, 2018
A red Toyota Corolla veered left for an unknown reason while going west on Summit Street Friday morning.
The car struck a pedestrian sign, a large landscaping rock and flipped on its side, knocking over the Windchimes condominiums’ sign.
Akron resident and driver, Keith Brown, 62, was taken to University Hospitals Portage Medical Center in Revenna, Ohio. According to the Kent accident report, Brown has had a history of seizures.
Witness to the event was Macie Whittlesey, a sophomore recreation park tourism management major. Whittlesey said in an email she was traveling behind Brown and saw him collide into sign and rocks.
“I automatically slammed on my brakes and pulled over to the side of Summit Street as debris from the crosswalk sign came flying towards my vehicle,” Whittlesey said. “I dialed Emergency number 911 … as I ran over to the man in the red vehicle to see if he was okay.”
Kent Police Officer John Gormsen stated the driver did not appear injured during the accident.
“To my knowledge, the driver wasn’t injured,” Gormsen said. “We’re not sure if it was a medical emergency that caused it or if he was distracted that caused it.”
