Delta Gamma crowns winner at Anchorman Pageant
November 4, 2017
While LeBron James was securing a win in Washington, D.C., Blake Hoover, a junior exercise science major and member of Kent State’s Sigma Nu Fraternity, dragged a basketball hoop onto the stage for Delta Gamma’s Anchorman Pageant Friday.
Jaret Shannon, a sophomore public relations major and member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, was crowned the winner.
Delta Gamma held their annual search for their “Anchorman” at the Kent Stage to raise money for Service for Sight, their national philanthropic partner. Service for Sight’s mission is to promote preservation of sight for the visually impaired.
“This event means a lot because this is what DG is known for,” said Christen Wheeler, a junior integrated social studies major and a Delta Gamma member. “This is how we find our sweetheart and this is usually where we get most of our money for Service for Sight. It just means a lot that everyone comes out and supports us, even if they’re not in a sorority, even if they don’t know what it is.”
The first half of the event featured a talent competition. One highlight of the evening was Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity’s nominee, Brennan Macaluso, explaining the risks associated with his performance and then proceeding to lie on a bed of nails with two Delta Gamma sisters standing on top of him. He walked off the stage to shouts from the audience about the holes left in his shirt.
“I guess I need a new shirt,” he said in response.
Another act was Sigma Delta Tau Sorority’s nominee, Jack Burke, who competed in an eating challenge with two dozen doughnuts and a Sigma Delta Tau sister. Both brought people to help them and it devolved into both flinging doughnuts out to the audience.
Other performances included a contestant in drag, a cinnamon challenge, two poetry readings, singing and a tribute to Bob Ross.
The packed seats consisted of family and friends of performers, along with Delta Gamma sisters and members of the Fraternity and Sorority Life community supporting each other.
