Soccer secures weekend split in FGCU tournament
September 3, 2017
Kent State women’s soccer took a weekend trip to the sunshine state, which proved to be somewhat fruitful.
The Flashes (2-3) beat Florida Atlantic (3-3) 1-0 Sunday after falling to Florida Gulf Coast (4-1) 2-0 on Saturday.
The Flashes lone goal of the weekend came off the foot of freshman forward Cameron Shedenhelm, who snuck one past FAU goalkeeper Jennifer Ocampo in the 63rd minute to give the Flashes the lead.
Senior Kristen Brots and freshman Isabelle Mihail recorded the assists.
The goal was Shedenhelm’s third of the year, which leads the team. She also leads the team in points with six.
Junior Ashleah McDonald recorded the shutout, her first of the year.
The Flashes stumbled out of the gate on the weekend however, as they recorded 13 shots on goal but still fell 2-0 to Florida Gulf Coast.
The Eagles’ first goal came off the head of sophomore Marjorie Boilesen, who knocked the ball in after a pass from senior Varin Ness to give FGCU a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.
Their final goal came in the 80th minute when junior Holly Fritz sent a free kick into the box that was headed in by senior Lauren Greene. Greene entered the game as a sub in the 77th minute.
The Flashes return home this Thursday to take on the University of Pittsburgh at Dix Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
