Soccer drops season-opener to Purdue
August 18, 2017
Kent State’s (0-1) season opened on a hiccup Friday afternoon, as the Flashes dropped their season opening matchup to Purdue (1-0) 2-1.
The Boilermakers opened the scoring in the 27th minute on a goal from freshman Hannah Melchiorre. Melchiorre’s goal marked the first time since 2014 that a freshman accounted for Purdue’s first goal of the season.
The Flashes answered back in the 43rd minute on a Purdue own goal when Mackenzie Lesnick sent a corner kick into the Purdue box that found its way into the back of the net to knot the score at one.
Purdue took the lead for good in the 62nd minute when senior Maddy Williams roped one in to give the Boilermakers the lead.
The Flashes were outshot by Purdue 15-10, but both times finished with seven shots on goal.
Kent State will be back in action this Sunday when they take on Cleveland State in their home opener. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
