Memorial service for Kent State student James Stockdale will be Saturday
June 20, 2017
A public memorial service for James Stockdale, the Kent State student who died last week, and his mother, Kathryn Stockdale, will be held June 24 at 1:00 p.m. at NewPointe Community Church, 3950 State Route 39 in Dover, Ohio.
A statement issued by the family said the memorial will be followed by a receiving line with members of the Stockdale family.
Police said Jacob Stockdale shot and killed James and their mother before shooting himself when police arrived at the family’s home near Beach City.
Jacob Stockdale is still in critical condition, although the family is optimistic for his recovery. The statement said he will be undergoing several procedures and surgeries “in the coming days.”
In the statement, Calvin Stockdale, the oldest brother, said “I don’t know why Jacob did what he did last week, but I do know he is my brother; I speak for our family when I say we love him and forgive him. The prayers and support for my family have been deeply appreciated and we ask for continued prayers for Jacob’s healing –– body, mind, and spirit.”
James Stockdale played the bango, bass and guitar in the Stockdale Family Band, known for its bluegrass music.
In his obituary, it describes him as “a well-known catalyst for family fun. He enjoyed dancing, skiing, farming, fishing, hunting, and camping, displaying an innate love of nature. He easily made new friends wherever he went and leaves behind many friends and family who love him dearly.”
Zion Reformed Church in Winesburg, where the Stockdales are members, has established a Stockdale Family Memorial Fund to help cover funeral costs and Jacob Stockdale’s medical expenses.
The church is collecting direct contributions via mail as well.
In lieu of flowers, the Stockdale family asks the public to support the church’s memorial fund.
