The women’s lacrosse team took another step toward its inaugural season Friday, as the Kent State University Department of Athletics chose Brianne Tierney as the new head coach, a source confirmed to The Kent Stater.

The Department of Athletics is expected to officially announce Tierney’s hiring early next week.

Tierney will bring with her a long lineage of lacrosse accomplishments, both as a player and a coach. Her collegiate lacrosse career began at Loyola University, before she moved to Colgate University, where she eventually graduated. She scored 21 goals in her four years. 

Tierney then entered the coaching ranks, first serving as an assistant lacrosse coach at Monmouth University in the 2007-08 season, which was then followed by an assistant coaching position at the University of California at Berkeley. 

In 2010, she helped establish the women’s lacrosse program at Lebanon Valley College, where she served as coach until 2012. She was named the Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year in 2012 after leading the LVC to record-breaking wins.

She has served as the director of Lacrosse Operations at the University of Denver since 2012, where her father Bill serves as the coach.  Tierney also served as the coach at Cherry Creek High School, which is located in Greenwood Village, Colorado. She led them to the 5A state championship in her first season at the helm.

The lacrosse team will use both Dix Stadium and Murphy-Mellis Field as practicing and playing facilities. Their inaugural season will begin in 2018-19.
