Men’s golf takes second at OSU-hosted tournament
April 23, 2017
The men’s golf team placed second in the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by The Ohio State University.
The team’s final score was 22 strokes over par, 10 strokes behind No. 10 Illinois. The Flashes are ranked No. 12 in the nation.
“I’m a little disappointed,” coach Herb Page said of his teams performance. “We’ve been on such a roll and we didn’t play very good today and Illinois did. We just got beat.”
The Flashes were led by sophomore Bjarki Petursson, who placed second overall. Junior Ian Holt tied for third place and senior Josh Whalen tied for ninth. Sophomore Gisli Sveinbergsson and junior Chase Johnson also placed in the top 25.
“We just didn’t get the scores we need from some of the guys,” Page said. “It was a disappointing day. We didn’t get the team balance that we’ve had.”
The Flashes led the first two rounds of the tournament, but dropped by 11 strokes during the final round.
“We didn’t compete well today,” Page said. “We didn’t look good. At this stage of the season, we can’t have these days. We can do better, and we’ll have to work on some things. We’ve got to get mentally tougher.”
The team will next compete in the Mid-American Conference Championship in Nashport, Ohio, beginning Friday.
“It’s a big week,” Page said. “Short week, we only get a couple days, but we’ve been playing well all year. Hopefully we’ll get another championship for the university.”
