The Kent State men’s golf team had a record-breaking finish at its tournament Monday.

The Flashes came in first at the Seahawk Intercollegiate hosted by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

The team ended the tournament seven strokes under par, 47 ahead of second place Army. The Flashes’ score broke a tournament record held by East Carolina since 2012.

“Everybody played well, especially during a brutal day yesterday,” Coach Herb Page said. “They were playing through wind, which was a mental test that we passed with flying colors. We were very smart and played very tough. We are on a roll here.”

Senior Josh Whalen led the team and finished in first. Whalen also broke the individual record for the tournament and scored a personal best for three rounds.

“This is the third individual win for us, and with Whalen being a senior, it was an emotional victory,” Page said. “I’m very proud of Josh.”

All five golfers placed in the top 15, including sophomore Gisli Sveinbergsson in second. It was also Sveinbergsson’s best career finish.

“This is his third straight top 10 finish,” Page said. “The guys are playing really, really well. It’s fun watching them.”

Junior golfer Spencer Dobbs also participated as an individual, tying for 34th.

The Flashes play again on April 1 at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M University.
