Kent State’s Epsilon Mu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will be having a Kent City Clean Up community service event on Sunday.

The chapter hopes that with its own, and other members of the community’s help, it can help maintain the cleanliness of the city by picking up the mess that is left behind after Halloween festivities.

“With it being a Halloween coming up, we know that’s a lot of trash on the ground, and the city of Kent doesn’t actually clean up on Sundays — so the trash will still be there,” said Sheila Penn, Delta Sigma Theta president and junior sports administration major. “We took the initiative to come out and have the student organizations and others who are willing to register and come help us clean up the city.”

Each group will be given bags and gloves to clean up their assigned area of clean up. Additionally, food will be provided in the morning, along with pizza and music after the event. By participating in this event, the sorority will also be giving community service hours for anyone who asks for them.

“I contacted the city of Kent, and they are giving us garbage bags and gloves they are really happy that we are doing it,” Penn said. “So far, we have about 30 people coming to the clean up, —which is pretty good — so we’re actually really excited about it.”

Community service plays a large role within Greek Life. For many who participate, it is so important to give back.

“Sometimes you don’t understand how fortunate you are, and I feel like sometimes you just go on with life going on the same pace to keep you on track with your goals,” Penn said. “But sometimes people forget to give back. Every little thing does help.”
