Our View: Meeting ignorance with violence solves nothing
March 1, 2016
During a recent rally in Southern California, three people were stabbed by members of the Ku Klux Klan. Though police have come out and stated that the acts were done in self defense, the question still remains as to why anyone in this day and age would ever want to be a part of an organization based solely on hatred and violence.
Fighting fire with fire has never solved anything and it’s not what civil rights activist leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. stood for. At the same time, it can be understood how any type of movement the KKK makes can be met with violent retaliation.
The KKK has built up such a reputation that even in an instance where the group’s actions may in fact be justified, it’s hard to feel sympathy for someone who has not been sympathetic toward others. The fact that this group and mindset still continues on today is a prime example of how, even though this country has made progress, it still has quite a long way to go.
Still, there is always a better way to handle ignorance without someone being critically injured in any way, shape or form. Using violence as a solution does nothing but create more problems.
