Kent’s best-kept secret delivers
February 3, 2016
Looking for a cheap, local place to get a drink? Stop by The Local Public House. Tucked away behind the Kent Stage, it’s one of Kent’s best-kept secrets.
With nearly 500 craft beers sold in store, there is a little something for everyone. Each month it features three craft brews. In addition to locally made beer, the store also offers locally made snacks such as Shearers potato chips and Tommy’s Old Fashion Jerky.
The Local Public House is not only a liquor store but also a bar. Relax in one of the big red chairs and enjoy a $1 shot and snack, while having a great conversation with one of the bartenders.
Robin Rockney, a fifth-year interior design major, enjoys everything about The Local Public House.
“I like the big selection, and that I can enjoy it in house,” Rockney said. “I also get a social experience without the bar price. I always meet someone worth talking to as well.”
The friendly, helpful staff greets you right when you walk in and are knowledgeable about the vast selection. Joey Terry, a recent Kent State graduate, talked about the great events it hosts and the atmosphere.
“We have an event for all the holidays and usually around the time the seasons change,” Terry said. “It’s like a great basement bar, really relaxed and fun.”
The Local Public House hosted a winter tasting on Jan. 22 and have a Valentine’s Day themed tasting on Feb. 5.
Team manager Colton Frank has enjoyed watching the business grow over the last two years.
“I’ve worked here since the first Saturday it was open,” Frank said. “Now, two years later, we have people from Streetsboro and Ravenna calling us for deliveries.”
The Local Public House opened in Kent in Fall 2014. They are also unique in that customers can have any combination of the store’s collection delivered straight to their door for a small fee.
