New Sorority to debut at Kent State in Fall 2016
February 16, 2016
Kent State University Greek Life is set to introduce its newest sorority Sigma Delta Tau (SDT) to campus in Fall 2016.
Center for Student Involvement (CSI) was approached by the current sororities at Kent State to provide a new chapter for students to join Greek Life on campus.
Della Marshall, senior associate director for CSI, explained that the process to bring a new chapter to campus can take three to four months. First, a national request for any new sororities interested in coming to Kent State is sent out. CSI then reviews the applications and goes through an extensive interview process for the sororities that show interest.
CSI then presents a conference with the applicants for the current sororities at Kent State, and the sororities vote on which chapter they would like to adopt on campus.
“We don’t want the same old, same old,” Marshall said. “We’re looking for a new sorority that can bring diversity to Greek Life.”
Sigma Delta Tau will debut Fall 2016 but will not open its recruitment process until after formal recruitment is finished for the other chapters.
After this process, SDT will have the opportunity to recruit members to join its sorority. It will be considered a colony until it reaches a quota for its members. After the chapter reaches its quota, it will be able to petition for affiliation by Kent State.
According to SDT’s national website and mission statement, SDT serves to empower women. The chapter has raised funds for the Sigma Delta Tau Foundation, Prevent Child Abuse America, Jewish Women International and Women for Women International.
“I am very excited to welcome the new sorority to campus, they are different than all the chapters we already have and it will give more girls an opportunity to join Greek life,” Magee Campana said, a sophomore fashion merchandising major and member of Alpha Phi.
“I want every girl to be in Greek Life and SDT is going to help give more girls a home,” Danielle Casso said, a sophomore fashion merchandising major and member of Alpha Phi.
Sigma Delta Tau was founded in 1917 by seven Jewish women but the chapter does not affiliate with any religion.
Kent State Greek Life is comprised of Interfraternity Council Fraternities, Multicultural Greek Fraternity or Sorority and Panhellenic Council Sorority. For any information on Sigma Delta Tau or other chapters, visit http://www.kentstategreeklife.com/
