Track and field prepares for championship

The Kent State track team is set to compete in the Mid-American Conference championships this weekend. The top six men and the top eight women will score in each event.
Kent State is ranked in the top 10 in 17 events. Kent’s men team ranks in the top six in 10 events and the women team rank in top eight in seven events. The men were ranked third and the women ranked second in a MAC preseason poll.
Kent’s athletes are ranked in the top six on the track in the 60-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, the men and women’s 4×400 relay teams and the distance medley. On the field they are ranked in the high jump, triple jump, long jump, the shot put, weight throw and the pole vault.
The Kent athletes expected to finish in the top spot are senior Will Barnes, senior Donovan Tolbert, senior Dior Delophont, junior Morgan Estes and both men and women’s 4×400 relay teams.
“Not only are we looking for a championship we’re looking for people to better their marks and get national qualifying mark,” head coach Bill Lawson said.
The MAC championships start Friday morning, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. with the heptathlon events and goes until approximately 6:00 p.m. The events continue Saturday, Feb 27, at 10:00 a.m. The awards will be given at 5:00 p.m.
“We’re looking for improvement individually and a team title,” Lawson said.
