The Kent State Ice Arena held a Late Night Skate on Wednesday to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Erika Gallion, a graduate student interning at the Women’s Center, said the Ice Arena contacted the Women’s Center asking if they could set up an informational table at their Late Night Skate. The table had hand-outs providing information for events such as the mammogram screenings, the Bra Drive and Knitting for Those in Need.

“I think it has been successful so far,” Gallion said. “We’ve had a lot of people donate their bras.”

While many students who attended the event were there mainly to skate, many did stop at the table and get the hand-outs the Women’s Center provided. In addition to handing out information for Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Women’s Center also provided information about Violence Awareness month, which also takes place in October.

Adrienne Weiner, a sophomore exploratory major, attended the event and thought having the table set up there was a good idea.

“Even if people glance at the booth as they walk past, it is still helping to raise awareness,” she said. “They might not have known it was Breast Cancer Awareness month (if they didn’t).”

Weiner also said she likes it when schools participate in raising awareness for causes such as breast cancer awareness, commenting on how the schools engage students.

“I like when they design pink shirts or by cheerleaders wearing pink bows in their hair,” she said. “Or even (with) student sections having a pink theme to help raise awareness for a good cause.”
