Friday’s “White Coat Ceremony” will welcome new podiatric medicine students for the upcoming school year.

At the ceremony, the class of 2019 is welcomed by their deans, faculty and administration.

“The cloaking with the white coat, the mantle of the medical profession, is a hands-on experience that underscores the bonding process. It is personally placed on each student’s shoulders by individuals who believe in the students’ ability to carry on the noble tradition of doctoring. It is a personally delivered gift of faith, confidence and compassion,” said Lisa O’Connell, the Events and Special Programs Assistant Director.

The first White Coat Ceremony took place in 1993 at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons.  Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine has been hosting the White Coat Ceremony for podiatry students since 2005.

The purpose of the ceremony is to set clear expectations regarding the role as a physician, O’Connell said.
