Men’s track and field splits to four different locations, finds success
April 26, 2015
The records continue to pile up for the Kent State men’s track and field team.
Over the weekend, the team was split up at four different locations for their meets. The team had athletes competing at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa; the Hillsdale College Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Michigan; the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa; and the Ashland Alumni Open in Ashland, Ohio.
The 4×200 relay team of junior William Barnes, senior Miles Dunlap, and sophomores Andrew O’Leary and Matthew Tobin, had been flirting with the school record all season long. Then, on Saturday at the Drake Relays, they finally eclipsed it.
The team ran a time of 1:24.61 seconds, breaking the old record, which was set in 1984. The team finished in sixth place with their new record-breaking time.
Barnes kept the success going by earning a top-three finish on Saturday in the 110-meter hurdles. His time of 13.60 was good enough for third place overall.
At the Ashland Alumni Open, junior Matthias Tayala finished third in the discus throw. Tayala’s best throw in the event came at a mark of 70.27 meters.
The duo of senior Michael King and sophomore David Paliscak respectively finished in fourth and fifth place in shot put. King threw for a mark of 16.87 meters while Paliscak threw 16.84 meters.
Junior Kyle Schlumbohm was the lone athlete to take home a first-place finish for the men’s team over the weekend when he participated at the Kip Janvrin Open. Schlumbohm competed in the pole vault and secured his win when he jumped at a height of 4.75 meters.
The Flashes will be back in action again this weekend when they travel to Columbus to compete at the Jesse Owens Classic on Friday and Saturday.
