The Arabic Student Association will host “Modest Me: Breaking the Stereotype” in celebration of Women’s History Month.

The event, funded by Undergraduate Student Government, will take place in Bowman Hall 133 on March 13 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The event will have a panel discussion with Fatina Abdrabboh, regional director of American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee; Winnie Detwa, an Egyptian-American lifestyle blogger; and Jinan Deena, writer and event coordinator of Syrian American Medical Society.  All have various backgrounds addressing the issue of women’s empowerment in the Arab world and breaking the stereotypes that Middle Eastern women hold.

The women will break down the cultural and religious aspect behind wearing the scarf as a head covering and how it’s a personal choice, said Aisha Hamdallah Arabic Student Association president.

“A lot of people don’t understand, and they can’t fathom why someone has to cover their hair,” Hamdallah said.

The event will have free admission, free henna tattoos and be open to the entire Kent State community.
