The Kent Historical Society and Kent State Women’s Center will host a presentation about the book “Grandma Gatewood: Ohio’s Legendary Hiker” on April 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kent Free Library.

Speaker Bette Lou Higgins, who wrote the book “Grandma Gatewood: Ohio’s Legendary Hiker,” will discuss how Emma Gatewood became the first woman to hike 2,050-mile Appalachian Trail on her own at age 67 in 1955. Gatewood’s great-niece, who has also hiked the trail, will be in attendance.

Women’s Center Assistant Director Cassandra Pegg-Kirby said students will benefit from hearing how Gatewood overcame various personal difficulties, including raising 11 children and leaving an abusive marriage.

“This was something she did for herself, but in the process, she inspired others who have come after her,” Pegg-Kirby said. “It’s an opportunity to hear a story that’s not often told.”
