Kent State University will host its first Shredmania event March 17, a one-day event in coordination with Recyclemania.

Recyclemania is a 8-week long competition for university recycling programs to promote waste reduction on campus. 

The shredding event gives the community the opportunity to shred personal documents, notebooks, magazines and more said Leah Graham, outreach and recycling coordinator at the Office of Sustainability. 

Paper can be dropped off between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Administrative Services Building Loading Dock at 1500 Horning Road. 

“It’s something new that we are trying this year and it’s sponsored by the Division of Human Resources, the Office of Sustainability and University Facilities Management,” Graham said.  “It’s a one day, free shredding event that’s open to students, faculty and staff at Kent State and it’s open to the community members of Kent.”

 The Office of Sustainability asked that university documents are kept separate from personal items for tracking purposes, she said.  

University and student documents will be weighed and the total weights will be sent to Recyclemania, but documents from the community don’t count Graham said.

Paperclips, staples and other binding materials do not have to be removed in order for documents to be shredded, she added. 

The event will take place during day one of E-cyclemania, a two-day electronics recycling drive.
