Cross country wraps up season at Great Lakes Regional

The Kent State cross-country team concluded its season at the 2014 NCAA Great Lakes Regional, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, in Madison, Wisconsin on Friday.

The women’s team ran the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course first and placed 18th out of 32 teams with a total of 546 team points. They ran the 6k course in a time of 1:51:32.
Junior Rachel Slingluff surpassed her teammate, senior Kelsey McAlpine, and led the way for the Flashes with a 6k personal-best time of 21:20 for 55th place. Breaking into the top 80, McAlpine finished just a little behind Slingluff at 73rd place with a time with a time of 21:40.
Michigan State won the women’s Great Lakes Regional with 28 points and a final collective time Kent State’s men’s unit placed 23rd out of 30 teams with a time of 2:43:20 and a total of 631 team points.
On the 10k course, senior Matt Kahl led the men with a PR time of 31:18 for 48th place, putting him in the top 50.
On the men’s side, out of the six finishing racers, five runners set personal-best times along with Kahl’s time of 31:18. Among those four were redshirt sophomore Grant Onken in 132nd place (32:42), redshirt sophomore Mitchell Grose in 133rd place (32:43), senior Joey Kinkelaar in 142nd place (32:52) and freshman Nick Schank in 181st place (34:14). Redshirt sophomore Samuel Allen finished ahead of Schank with a time of 33:45 in 176th place.
Wisconsin won the men’s Great Lakes Regional with 61 points and a time of 2:32:40. Indiana State’s John Mascari took the top individual spot with a time of 30:07.
