KSU Veterans Club hosts run for donations to homeless
September 28, 2014
Instead of packing your summer clothing away for the fall, donate them. The KSU Veterans Club will be hosting its third annual Clothes Off Your Back run Oct. 2 from 5-7 p.m., starting in the M.A.C. Center. Students, faculty, staff and community members will have the opportunity to run and donate clothing items.
Josh Rider, assistant director for Kent State’s Center for Adult and Veteran Services, said this isn’t your average clothing donation.
“(Those who participate) donate the clothes off their backs — with respectable garments underneath,” he said. “It’s not a 5K run or anything like that, about a mile loop. People will see these students running and wonder ‘why aren’t they wearing any clothes,’ which will bring awareness to the fact that most homeless people, including homeless veterans experience this issue.”
Rider said the clothes donated during this event will be given to the homeless, with the focus being on homeless veterans and their families. Clothing will be given to such homeless facilities as The Freedom House and other shelters around Portage County.
Rider also said a DJ will be present and Redbull will be provided for those who participate. Donations will still be accepted from non-runners.
