Looking back at a YouTube role model
September 30, 2014
Jenna Marbles — remember her? The hilarious YouTube sensation isn’t afraid to say exactly what’s on her mind. She exploded on the scene in 2010 with her video, “How to trick people into thinking you’re good looking.” The world fell in love with her on the first watch. I still look for her videos online and watch old ones over again. Some may disagree with her thoughts, but I know others relate. I see Jenna as an awesome role model for girls over 16 years old. Here is what Jenna Marbles has taught me:
Don’t let life make you boring
We live in a world where we wake up, go to work or class, go home, do homework, go to sleep and repeat. It’s a constant cycle, that can get to you. Jenna taught me that sometimes we have to break that cycle and laugh at the ridiculousness within our world. Jenna had all the makings to run within the average cycle. Instead she saw that she didn’t want that and even though it was a viral accident that her first video blew up she saw potential and kept going posting videos. Her videos, such as “How to avoid talking to people you don’t want to talk to“ and “Things I don’t have time for,” are silly videos that complain about our world in the lightest of ways.
You’re never too old to learn
I don’t mean it’s never too old to go back to school for what you want— which it’s not. It’s also never too old to learn other random fun and funny life hacks. For example, I got a dog last year and Jenna — being a huge animal person — showed me how to parent my dog and also mildly annoy them. Hilariously enough she is a great dog parent. If you want to know how to parent and annoy your dogs at the same time look up “ How to parent your dog” and “How to mildly annoy your dog.” If you don’t have a dog she can also teach you how to mildly annoy other people.
You’re not alone in your awkwardness
Before these videos you think, am I the only girl who does this, thinks this and acts like this? You could ask your friends, but friends are sneaky and who knows if they are just going along with it. Jenna’s videos cover it all from how girls drive, shower and even get dressed. These are all quirks we can relate to. Her inner monologues are so honest – I can actually hear myself saying those things. She taught me to just be my awkward self it’s normal.
If you need inspiration or just need to know someone else out there who gets you, go check out her new and old weekly videos. Jenna Marbles is not a new find, but her videos are classics you don’t want to miss.
