The Kent State women’s cross country took home a fifth-place finish in the 20th annual Iona College Meet of Champions Saturday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., hosted by Iona College.

The women totaled 170 points as a team and posted a total team time of 1:58.36. Senior Kelsey McAlpine led the women to fifth place in a 20-team field with an 11th-place overall finish out of 164 runners. She recorded a time of 22:47.21.

Junior Rachel Slingluff stayed on her teammates heels and was not far behind McAlpine, steadily maintaining a 5-10 second gap behind her. Slingluff took 15th place with a time of 22:53.37.

The men claimed 13th place out of 23 schools as redshirt senior Matt Kahl led the way, placing 13th out of 208 runners with a time of 26:11.22. The two Flashes who finished closest to Kahl were a little over a minute behind him.

Sophomore Jared Fleming finished 72nd with a time of 27:19.76, and redshirt sophomore Mitchell Grose clicked heels with his younger teammate for most of the race. Grose crossed the finish line a few spots behind Fleming in 76th place with a time of 27:25.37.

The cross country team will return to the course Friday, Oct. 3, when the men and women travel to the All-Ohio Championships in Cedarville, Ohio.
