The Limón Dance Company will perform for the Kent State community as part of the Thomas Schroth Visiting Artists Series Friday.

The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the E. Turner Stump Theatre, located in the Kent State Center for Performing Arts, and will be followed by a reception in the Roe Green Center lobby.

José Limón and his mentor, Doris Humphrey, founded the Limón Dance Company in 1946. Limón’s work is known to have a distinct technique, said John Crawford, dean of the College of the Arts. Crawford was dancer and has a connection with the Limón Dance Company.

“When I was dancing and when I was studying dance, the Limón work, the repertory and the style, the technique, was a large part of what I studied,” Crawford said. Crawford performed in the Ann Vachon Dance Conduit, located in Philadelphia, Pa., with Ann Vachon, one of the original members of the Limón Dance Company.

Crawford also studied at summer workshops the Limón Dance Company hosted. He performed excerpts of Psalm, the first piece the company will be performing on Friday.

The company will perform four pieces under the artistic direction of Carla Maxwell.

Maxwell also choreographed the second piece, Etude, which Crawford described as “dramatically expressive.”

The concert is free of charge and is expected to be sold out, said Effie Tsengas, director of communications and marketing for the College of the Arts.

Tickets for the performance can be purchased Monday-Friday from noon to 5 p.m. at the Performing Arts Box Office, located in the Kent State Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets can also be purchased by calling 330-672-ARTS or online at www.dance.kent.edu.
