The Hugh A. Glauser School of Music will welcome Charles Latshaw, the new director of the school’s orchestra, with a performance at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Cartwright Hall.

The performance is designed to teach the orchestra students and strengthen their skills while entertaining the audience, Latshaw said. He also promised a surprise for audience members.

“We’ve changed some of the surprises and added some new ones to make it more surprising for a modern audience,” Latshaw said. “That part of the concert is going to be a lot of fun and very unusual.”

Latshaw joins the Kent community from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana, where he completed his coursework for a doctorate in orchestral conducting, according to a university press release. Latshaw said he conducted professionally for the past 10 years but is ready to move into a teaching position.

Tickets for the concert are on sale weekdays from noon to 5 p.m. in the Performing Arts Box Office, located in the Roe Green Center in the Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets may be purchased from home at 330-672-ARTS (2787) or www.kent.edu/music.
