‘Half The Sky’ documentary to be shown Tuesday
November 2, 2013
A showing of “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” will be held in the Kiva on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The film is based on the book of the same title written by upcoming Presidential Speaker Series guests Sheryl WuDunn and Nicholas Kristof. A cast of actresses such as Diane Lane, America Ferrera, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde tell the stories of women and girls around the world facing gender and ethnic oppression.
“Half the Sky” is not just a book by Kristof and WuDunn but has also been adapted into a worldwide movement that, according to the “Half the Sky” website, “is cutting across platforms to ignite the change needed to put an end to the oppression of women and girls worldwide.”
The film is part of a fall film series presented by the Women’s Center and co-sponsored by the Center for Adult and Veteran Services, the Office of Sexual and Relationship Violence Support Services and the Women’s Studies program.
The film, “reflects viable and sustainable options for empowerment and offers an actionable blueprint for transformation.”
In accordance with this concept, a discussion will follow the film and students can learn how to get involved and make a difference concerning issues related to the film.
An additional showing of the film will be shown on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Kiva.
Kristof and WuDunn will be speaking on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
