Deadline for sorority registration approaches
September 15, 2013
Greek life is in full swing this week as the official start of rush begins for sororities. Informational meetings will be held in the KIVA from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. All prospective new members are required to attend one of the sessions, and 11:59 p.m. Tuesday night is the deadline for formal sorority recruitment.
The six sororities on campus, all members of the Panhellenic Council, require a $40 registration fee to complete formal recruitment. One new sorority, Phi Mu, will be joining the existing groups and will participate in informational sessions, but will not begin formal recruitment until the week after the other chapters have finished. Phi Mu will give women the potential to be a founding member of a chapter.
Once registered and accepted, a potential new member will go through three rounds of introduction to help them understand the chapter that would be the best fit for them. Women will participate in a philanthropy round, which will stretch over two days, a house round and a preference round to help familiarize them with the chapters. All of these rounds will culminate on bid day, when all applicants will know which sorority they have been accepted into.
Brittany Dayton, a dual major in computer science and public relations and a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma, said, “We want our sisters, you know? We don’t want recruitment; we just want it to be bid day.”
The sororities expect to see a higher-than-average number of recruits.
Stephanie Tripi, Vice President of Recruitment and Retention of the Panhellenic Council, said, “We cannot guarantee a bid, but we strive to have every potential new member or PNM to receive a bid.”
