Jean Kilbourne coming to campus

Jean Kilbourne will visit Kent State to discuss images in advertising 7 p.m. Monday in room 215 of Oscar Ritchie Hall.
According to jeankilbourne.com, Kilbourne is internationally recognized for her revolutionary work on the image of women in advertising and for her critical studies of alcohol and tobacco advertising. The purpose of this event is to educate students on the importance of media literacy.
Brooke Bennett, senior psychology major and president of the National Residence Hall Honorary, pitched the idea of bringing Kilbourne to campus. Bennett said that she hopes those in attendance will increase their knowledge and critical thinking skills.
“By bringing Jean Kilbourne to campus, we hope to help educate students on the importance of media literacy and to provide them with the tools needed to turn a critical eye to advertisements and additional media,” Bennett said. “We hope that those in attendance will walk away with a new-found perspective on the media and our larger society as a whole.”
