More than 200 students enjoyed a night of entertainment and recognition Wednesday as Black United Students commenced its Annual Ebony Achievement Awards ceremony at 7 p.m. in the Kent State Student Center Ballroom. The event included one dance, four song and three poetry performances. The purpose of the event was to recognize African American, Latino American and Native American students for their academic excellence.

Marvin Logan, junior human development and family studies major and director of academic affairs for B.U.S., served as the main coordinator of the event and said he was pleased to honor the successes of students at Kent State.

“I couldn’t be happier, more proud or more excited that were able to celebrate the success of all of our AALANA students in this way,” Logan said. “I think it’s important to positively reinforce the accomplishments of our brothers and sisters to increase positive action.”

Rachel Hook, junior managerial marketing major, received an award and said she was thankful for the opportunity to participate.

“I was happy to come out and support my fellow S.A.L.S.A. members,” Hook said. “We’ve accomplished a lot this semester, and it’s nice to be recognized for it.”

Jason Washington, junior English major and president of B.U.S., said he is happy with the progress B.U.S. has made this year.

“This was definitely a year of building,” he said. “There’s always room for improvement, and I’m still going to be here, even when I’m not acting president.”

Logan said that B.U.S. will strive to continue to award students for their academic achievements and show their support in any way possible.

“If no one else sees you, if no one else knows what you do, we do,” Logan said. “If no one else appreciates you, if no one else supports you, we do.”
