A college student at Lone Star Community College in Texas stabbed at least 14 students, wounding at least four critically Tuesday. The student started his stabbing attack at 11:20 a.m. He was subdued by students and was arrested on the scene. A former classmate of the attacker said he was “eccentric” but didn’t seem “hateful to the world.”

California lawmakers are in talks about taking some tax exemptions away from youth groups who do not accept gay, transgender or atheist members. This measure is intended to pressure the Boy Scouts of America to lift its controversial ban on gay Scouts and troop leaders. The bill proposed would be first state to target the Boy Scouts for their current policies.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 killed at least 37 people and injured hundreds in southern Iran Tuesday. Iranian officials said it did not damage a nuclear plant in the region, which ceased fears of a radioactive release. The earthquake struck the town of Kaki, where officials say around 850 people were injured, including more than 100 who needed to be hospitalized.

Authorities in Lupelo, Miss. said a bullet in a drive-by shooting hit a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus elephant; however, a spokeswoman for the circus said the animal was not seriously injured and no other animals were harmed. Police said shots were fired at 2 a.m. into the area that housed the Indian elephant, but they are still unsure about a motive and are looking for suspects. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a news release that it is offering a $5,000 reward for any information regarding this incident that will lead to the conviction of those responsible.
