The Golden Battalion will host its second annual WhiteHot 5k Saturday at the Kent campus in honor of a Kent State alumna.

First Lt. Ashley White-Stumpf was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan October 22, 2011, when the assault force she was supporting triggered an improvised explosive device. She was serving as a member of a cultural support team working with a Joint Special Operations Task Force.

A few of White-Stumpf’s awards and decorations include the Ohio Faithful Service Ribbon and the National Defense Service Medal. After death, she received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

“The race begins at 8 a.m., and the starting point is outside of Terrace Hall,” said Cadet Kristen Calo, senior nursing major. “Participants will pretty much be running the campus loop.”

Calo said the 5,000-meter run is open to anyone and door prizes will be given out to different age group winners. She said each participant must pay a $25 admittance fee and participants are able to sign up the day of the race.

“We [Army ROTC] are participating in the run,” Calo said. “We are running in formation in our boots, pants and Golden Eagle Battalion shirts. All money raised at the event will go toward the White-Stumpf fund, the Battalion and the Ashley White-Stumpf Memorial Scholarship.”
