The Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training course will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 13 to 17 in Room 102 of Merrill Hall.

This 40-hour training course meets the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration standard for working on hazardous waste sites. To fully meet the requirement, however, participants must work at a 3-day supervised cleanup site, which is not included in the course.

“This course will include not only classroom instruction, but also hands-on exercises where students will suit up and practice cleaning up spilled materials, conducting decontamination activities and the like,” said Charles Hart, associate professor of environmental health sciences.

The course is open to public sector responders, employers and contractors involved in emerging planning and hazardous material cleanup, or anyone who would like to learn more about hazardous material response and cleanup. The cost of the course is $475.
