Walk a Mile in Her Shoes hosted in Risman Plaza Tuesday
April 13, 2013
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, an event dedicated to ending sexual violence, will take place 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Risman Plaza/Student Green.
This gender movement is put on by the Women’s Center. Men participating in the event are to wear high heel shoes, as provided by themselves. Women are to wear tennis shoes.
“The reason men walk in high heels is to symbolize the daily walk of women. Women are continually having to be extra vigilant and aware of their surroundings when they are walking,” said Jennie O’Connell, SART Education Intervention Coordinator at the Women’s Center. “They are often nervous, uncomfortable or scared going from one place to another especially at night. For one mile, men are asked to walk in high-heeled shoes to get a feel for being uncomfortable walking.”
Check-in and registration begins at 5 p.m. There will also be a keynote speaker, awards, door prizes and Flashperks available at the event.
